Elongated cushion diamonds, lab-grown and natural

An elongated cushion is a cushion stretched into a soft rectangle: the romance of a cushion with the longer look of an oval. It is one of the shapes that varies most from stone to stone, so it is chosen on video.

Every elongated cushion we sell is certified by GIA, IGI or HRD and has a 360° video, so you can see its outline and its sparkle before you buy. Below: elongated cushions in stock now, their real sizes, how to choose the ratio, and what our gemologist looks for.

02 · Why an elongated cushion

A soft rectangle, with vintage charm

A cushion has rounded corners and gently curved sides, like a pillow. Stretched to a ratio of about 1.15 to 1.35, it becomes an elongated cushion.

  1. Bigger than a square cushion

A 1 ct elongated cushion is about 6.4–7.0 × 5.0–5.4 mm; a square one is about 5.5–6.1 mm across.

  2. It makes the finger look longer

Like an oval, it draws the eye along the finger. A styling effect, not a rule.

  3. Soft corners

Its rounded corners have no points to chip, so it is a sturdy everyday stone.

  4. Two looks to choose from

Crisp “crushed ice” sparkle or larger, old-style flashes: it depends on how it was cut.

04 · Length-to-width ratio

Choosing the ratio: taste, not a grade

Elongated cushions usually fall between 1.15 and 1.35, and 1.20 to 1.30 is the classic look. Below about 1.10 a cushion reads as square; above 1.35 it starts to look like a long rectangle with soft corners.

The stones on this page and the stock links are filtered to this ratio, so you only see elongated cushions.

  • 1.25 Classic
  • 1.35 Long

05 · Crushed ice or chunky

Crushed ice or chunky flashes?

Cushions are cut in two styles. “Crushed ice” cushions have many small, glittering facets, a little like a radiant. Chunky, old-style cushions show fewer, larger flashes, closer to an antique stone.

The certificate doesn’t say which one you are getting; only the video does. Tell us the look you love and we will find it for you.

06 · What we look for

How to choose a good elongated cushion

  1. The look you love

Crushed ice or chunky: decide first, then judge each stone on video.

  2. A ratio you like

1.15 to 1.35; 1.20 to 1.30 is the classic look.

  3. Colour

Cushions show warm colour more than most shapes. If you see warmth on video, go up to F–G.

  4. An even outline

Both long sides and both ends should match, with gently rounded corners.

  5. Face-up size

Check the millimetres: some cushions are cut deep and face up small.

  6. Prongs

Four prongs or double prongs hold it well.

Natural or lab-grown? The advice is the same: an elongated cushion looks the same whatever its origin. Only the price differs, so compare live prices in Canadian dollars with the switch above the stones.

Our advice

“Cushions vary more than any other shape, from crisp “crushed ice” to big, old-style flashes. Tell us which look you love and we’ll find it for you; the certificate alone won’t say.”

07 · Questions

Elongated cushion questions

What is an elongated cushion diamond?

A cushion cut, with rounded corners and curved sides, stretched into a rectangle with a length-to-width ratio of about 1.15 to 1.35.

Elongated cushion or oval?

Both are long and soft. The oval is a smooth curve all round; the elongated cushion keeps gentle corners and a more vintage look.

What ratio makes a cushion elongated?

From about 1.15. Up to 1.10 a cushion looks square; 1.20 to 1.30 is the classic elongated look.

What is a crushed ice cushion?

A cushion cut with many small facets that give a glittering, broken-glass sparkle. Chunky or old-style cushions show larger flashes instead. Only video shows which one a stone is.

Do cushion diamonds show colour?

More than most shapes. G–H is a good start; if you see warmth on the video, go up to F–G.

What setting suits an elongated cushion?

Four prongs or double prongs, a halo or a bezel. Its rounded corners need no special protection.
