01 · What it is

A real diamond, grown in a lab

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: pure carbon, with the same crystal structure, hardness and fire as a diamond formed in the earth. Only its origin is different. It is grown in a lab over a few weeks, not mined.

There are two ways to grow one: CVD (chemical vapour deposition) and HPHT (high pressure, high temperature). Both make real diamonds. Without lab equipment, no jeweller can tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one. That’s why every lab-grown diamond we sell is certified, and its report says so.

You may also see them called lab-created or synthetic diamonds. All three names mean the same stone.

02 · The certificate

IGI or GIA: we read the certificate for you

IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) are the two main labs for lab-grown diamonds. The report lists the shape, carat weight, colour, clarity and cut, the growth method, and any treatment after growth.

A certificate gives you the grades. It doesn’t tell you whether the stone is a good one. That’s why our gemologist reads every certificate and turns it into one Jouwell Diamond Score. See how the score works.

03 · Price

What a lab-grown diamond costs

A lab-grown diamond usually costs much less than a natural diamond of the same size and grades. Within lab-grown diamonds, price follows the same rules: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. It also jumps at round weights such as 1, 1.5 and 2 carats.

Lab-grown prices change more often than natural ones, so we don’t publish a price list. Every stone in our search shows its live price in Canadian dollars, with insured shipping and duties included. We don’t negotiate: the price is set fairly and shown openly.

A fair price is one you can check. Compare stones with the same certificate grades, then look at the score and the video. Two stones with the same grades can look very different.

04 · How to choose

How to choose a lab-grown diamond

  1. Start with the shape.

Shape decides how big the stone looks and how it sparkles. Our shape guide shows every shape at its real size.

  2. Put cut first.

Cut decides the sparkle more than any other grade. It’s the last place to save.

  3. Colour and clarity: buy what the eye sees.

Once a stone is set, most people can’t see the difference between D and G, or between VS1 and VS2. Choose an eye-clean stone and spend the difference on size or cut.

  4. Check for treatment after growth.

Some CVD diamonds are treated after growth to improve their colour, and the certificate says so. If you prefer untreated stones, choose “No post-growth treatment” in the search.

  5. Watch the video.

The 360° video shows what the grades can’t: how the stone handles light, and whether an inclusion sits in plain view.

Our diamond buying guide shows which grades to aim for at each size and shape.

05 · Returns and delivery

Returns, and how your diamond reaches you

Most lab-grown diamonds can be returned. If a stone shows “Returnable – 5 days”, you can return it within 5 days of delivery. It comes back to our Montreal office, and we refund you once it passes inspection against its certificate. Stones marked “Final sale” can’t be returned, and natural diamonds are always final sale.

Every diamond comes to our Montreal office first. Our gemologist checks it against its certificate, then it ships to you insured, anywhere in Canada. Shipping and duties are included in the price: nothing to pay at the door.

06 · Lab-grown or natural

Lab-grown or natural?

Both are real diamonds, and both come with a certificate. A lab-grown diamond lets you choose a larger stone or higher grades for the same budget. A natural diamond is rare, formed by nature over billions of years, and that matters to some buyers. Not sure? Compare both in our search.

07 · Questions

Questions about lab-grown diamonds

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It is pure carbon, with the same crystal structure, hardness and sparkle as a natural diamond. Only its origin is different: it is grown in a lab over a few weeks, not formed in the earth over billions of years.

IGI or GIA for a lab-grown diamond?

Both are respected labs, and both grade lab-grown diamonds. IGI grades most of the lab-grown diamonds on the market; GIA grades fewer. We offer both, and our gemologist reads every report the same way.

Can a jeweller tell that a diamond is lab-grown?

Not by eye or with a loupe: it takes lab equipment. That’s why the certificate matters. It states that the stone is lab-grown, and most lab-grown diamonds also carry a laser inscription on the girdle with the report number.

CVD or HPHT: does it matter?

Not for beauty. Both methods grow real diamonds, and the grades matter more than the method. The certificate states the method and any treatment after growth.

How much does a 1 carat lab-grown diamond cost in Canada?

It depends mostly on the cut, colour and clarity, and lab-grown prices change often. Our search shows live prices in Canadian dollars, with shipping and duties included.

Can I return a lab-grown diamond?

Yes, if the stone shows “Returnable – 5 days”. You can return it within 5 days of delivery, and we refund you once it passes inspection in Montreal. Stones marked “Final sale”, and all natural diamonds, can’t be returned.

Can you set my diamond in a ring?

Jouwell sells loose diamonds only. Once you’ve chosen your stone, we can refer you to Sawaiia for custom engagement ring design, or your own jeweller can set it.
