02 · Why a round

The most sparkle, for any setting

The round brilliant’s facets are arranged to send light back up through the top of the stone. No other shape does it as well.

  1. The most sparkle

It returns more light than any other shape: brightness, fire and sparkle in one stone.

  2. A cut grade you can use

Rounds get an overall cut grade on the certificate. Ask for the top grade and the hardest part of choosing is done.

  3. Timeless

It suits solitaires, halos, three-stone rings and every metal, and it never looks dated.

  4. Forgiving

Its sparkle hides small inclusions and a touch of warmth better than step cuts do.

04 · The cut grade

Why the cut grade matters most

Two rounds with the same colour, clarity and carat can look completely different. The cut grade tells you which one sparkles: Excellent from GIA, or Ideal or Excellent from IGI. A Good or Fair cut lets light leak out, and the stone looks dull whatever its other grades.

Polish and symmetry should be Very Good or better. Then check the video for even sparkle across the whole stone, with no dark ring and no glassy centre.

05 · What we look for

How to choose a good round

  1. The top cut grade

Put cut first. It decides the sparkle more than any other grade.

  2. Polish and symmetry

Very Good or Excellent on both.

  3. Colour to suit the metal

G–H looks white face-up in white gold or platinum. In yellow or rose gold, I–J often looks just as white.

  4. Eye-clean, not flawless

SI1–VS2 is usually eye-clean in a round. Check the video, not just the grade.

  5. Fluorescence

None to faint is the safe choice. Strong blue can make some stones look hazy; the video shows it.

  6. Just under round numbers

A 0.95 ct stone looks the same as a 1.00 ct and often costs less. Look just below 1, 1.5 and 2 ct.

Natural or lab-grown? The advice is the same: a round looks the same whatever its origin. Only the price differs, so compare live prices in Canadian dollars with the switch above the stones.

Our advice

“If you can’t decide, a round never disappoints. It returns more light than any other shape, and the cut grade on the certificate tells you most of what you need to know.”

06 · Questions

Round diamond questions

What cut grade should I choose for a round diamond?

Excellent from GIA, or Ideal or Excellent from IGI. Cut decides how much the stone sparkles, so it is the grade to spend on first.

What size is a 1 carat round diamond?

About 6.4 to 6.5 mm across. A 2 ct round is about 8.1 to 8.2 mm, not twice as wide, because the weight spreads in three dimensions.

Are round diamonds more expensive than other shapes?

Usually, for natural diamonds: cutting a round loses the most rough, and it is the shape most people want. For lab-grown diamonds the gap is smaller and changes with size. Compare live prices.

Which colour and clarity are the best value in a round?

G–H and SI1–VS2, eye-clean, are where we would start. A round’s sparkle hides small inclusions and a little colour well.

Does fluorescence matter in a round diamond?

Mostly not. Faint or medium blue rarely shows. Strong blue can make some stones look hazy, which is why we check every stone on video.

What setting suits a round diamond?

Any: four or six prongs, a bezel, a halo or a three-stone ring. With no corners or points, a round needs no special protection.
