Emerald vs radiant: same outline, different light

Both are rectangles with cut corners. The emerald cut is a step cut that flashes in calm, long steps; the radiant is faceted like a brilliant and sparkles like crushed ice.

The short answer: choose an emerald cut for a calm, elegant, Art Deco look, and spend on clarity. Choose a radiant for lots of sparkle and a stone that hides small inclusions, and check its millimetres.

01 · Size

Which looks bigger?

At the same weight they are about as long, but a typical radiant is a little wider, so it faces up about 7% larger. Many radiants are cut deep to keep weight, though, and a deep one can face up smaller: always compare the millimetres on the certificate.

02 · Light and clarity

Flashes or sparkle?

An emerald cut’s long, parallel steps reflect light in broad flashes of light and dark: the “hall of mirrors”. It is calm and elegant, and it shows the inside of the stone clearly, so we start at VS2 and F–G and always check the video.

A radiant has the same outline with brilliant facets, so it breaks light into many small sparkles. It hides small inclusions and a little colour well, which often means you can choose lower grades for the same look.

03 · On the finger

How they look on the hand

Both rectangles draw the eye along the finger. The emerald cut reads as clean lines and quiet light; the radiant as a bright, glittering stone that is noticed from across the room.

Both have cut corners, so both are sturdy. Four corner prongs or a bezel suit either.

04 · Price

Which costs less?

For natural diamonds, both usually cost less than a round of the same weight. An emerald cut needs a higher clarity to look its best, which can raise its price for the look you want.

For lab-grown diamonds there is no fixed rule: compare live prices at the weight you want.

07 · Questions

Emerald vs radiant questions

What is the difference between an emerald cut and a radiant?

Same outline, different facets. The emerald cut has long step facets that flash; the radiant has brilliant facets that sparkle.

Which hides inclusions better, emerald or radiant?

The radiant. Its many small facets mask small inclusions, while an emerald cut’s open steps show them, so it needs a higher clarity.

Does a radiant look bigger than an emerald cut?

A little: at the same weight a typical radiant is slightly wider, with about 7% more face-up area. A deep radiant can face up smaller, so compare millimetres.

Which is more expensive, emerald or radiant?

It depends on the grades. An emerald cut usually needs a higher clarity, which can make the look you want cost more. Compare live prices.

Is there a square version of each?

Yes: the square emerald and the square radiant, both covered on their shape pages.
