They are the two most popular shapes, and both are brilliant cuts. The round gives the most sparkle and the easiest choice; the oval looks bigger on the finger for the same weight.
The short answer: choose a round for maximum sparkle and a cut grade you can rely on. Choose an oval for more length on the finger and a softer, modern look, and check its bow tie on video.
01 · Size
Yes, mostly because it is longer. At the same weight, a typical oval is about 22% longer than a round is wide, but its face-up area is only about 5% larger. The extra length is what the eye reads as “bigger”, especially on a slim finger.
| Carat | Oval, length × width | Round, diameter | Oval length vs round | Oval face-up area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 6.0–6.5 × 4.2–4.6 mm | 5.1–5.2 mm | +22% | +5% |
| 1 | 7.5–8.2 × 5.3–5.8 mm | 6.4–6.5 mm | +22% | +5% |
| 1.5 | 8.6–9.4 × 6.1–6.6 mm | 7.3–7.4 mm | +22% | +5% |
| 2 | 9.4–10.3 × 6.7–7.3 mm | 8.1–8.2 mm | +22% | +5% |
| 3 | 10.8–11.8 × 7.6–8.4 mm | 9.2–9.4 mm | +22% | +5% |

02 · Sparkle and cut
The round, by a little. Its facets are arranged to return the most light of any shape, and it is the only shape that gets an overall cut grade on the certificate: ask for the top grade and you know it performs.
The oval uses the same kind of facets, stretched, so it is still very lively. But it has no cut grade, and most ovals show a bow tie: a darker band across the middle. A light one that moves is fine; a broad, dark one is not. That is why we check every oval on its 360° video.
03 · On the finger
Set north–south, an oval draws the eye along the finger and makes it look longer and slimmer. A round is symmetrical and classic: it suits every hand and every setting, and never dates.
Neither has points or corners, so both are good for active hands. Four or six prongs hold either well.
Drawn at actual size on a size 6 finger.
04 · Price
For natural diamonds, often yes: cutting a round wastes the most rough, and it is the shape most people want, so a natural oval usually costs less than a round of the same weight and quality.
For lab-grown diamonds there is no fixed rule. The difference changes with size and moves over time, so compare live prices at the weight you want.

The round, slightly: it returns the most light of any shape. An oval is still very lively, but it can show a bow tie, so judge it on video.
Often, for natural diamonds, because cutting a round wastes more rough. For lab-grown diamonds it depends on the size. Compare live prices at the weight you want.
Both are equally sturdy: neither has points or sharp corners. Four or six prongs, or a bezel, hold either well.
An oval set north–south makes the finger look longer. A round suits every hand. It is a styling effect, not a rule: choose the one you love.
