01 · What it is

A diamond formed by nature

A natural diamond formed deep in the earth, under intense heat and pressure, over billions of years, then was carried to the surface and mined. Each one is rare, and each one carries small marks of how it grew: its inclusions are a record of its own history.

A natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond are both real diamonds, with the same hardness and fire. Only a lab can tell them apart, which is why every natural diamond we sell comes with a certificate that confirms its origin.

You may also see them called mined diamonds. Both names mean the same stone.

02 · The certificate

GIA, IGI or HRD: we read the certificate for you

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) created the grading system used around the world and grades more natural diamonds than any other lab. IGI and HRD also grade natural diamonds. The report confirms the stone is natural and lists its shape, carat weight, colour, clarity and cut, its fluorescence, and any treatment the lab finds.

A certificate gives you the grades. It doesn’t tell you whether the stone is a good one. That’s why our gemologist reads every certificate and turns it into one Jouwell Diamond Score. See how the score works.

03 · Price

What a natural diamond costs

A natural diamond costs more than a lab-grown diamond of the same size and grades, because it is rare: it can’t be made to order. Its price follows the same rules: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. It also jumps at round weights such as 1, 1.5 and 2 carats.

Every stone in our search shows its price in Canadian dollars, with insured shipping and duties included. We don’t negotiate: the price is set fairly and shown openly.

A fair price is one you can check. Compare stones with the same certificate grades, then look at the score and the video. Two stones with the same grades can look very different.

04 · How to choose

How to choose a natural diamond

  1. Start with the shape.

Shape decides how big the stone looks and how it sparkles. Our shape guide shows every shape at its real size.

  2. Put cut first.

Cut decides the sparkle more than any other grade. It’s the last place to save.

  3. Colour and clarity: buy what the eye sees.

Once a stone is set, most people can’t see the difference between D and G, or between VS1 and VS2. Choose an eye-clean stone and spend the difference on size or cut.

  4. Check the fluorescence.

Many natural diamonds glow blue under ultraviolet light. Faint or medium fluorescence rarely shows; very strong fluorescence can make a few stones look hazy. The certificate lists it, and the video shows the stone.

  5. Watch the video.

The 360° video shows what the grades can’t: how the stone handles light, and whether an inclusion sits in plain view.

Our diamond buying guide shows which grades to aim for at each size and shape.

05 · Final sale and delivery

Final sale, and how your diamond reaches you

Natural diamonds are always final sale. That’s why you get everything before you buy: the certificate, the Jouwell Diamond Score, the 360° video of the exact stone, and our gemologist’s honest opinion if you ask for it. Read our returns and final sale policy.

Every diamond comes to our Montreal office first. Our gemologist checks it against its certificate and its laser inscription. If we find a problem, we don’t send it: you choose a full refund, or a similar stone our gemologist suggests. Then it ships to you insured, anywhere in Canada, with shipping and duties included. See how shipping works.

06 · Natural or lab-grown

Natural or lab-grown?

Both are real diamonds, and both come with a certificate. A natural diamond is rare, formed by nature over billions of years, and that matters to many buyers. A lab-grown diamond lets you choose a larger stone or higher grades for the same budget. Not sure? Compare both.

07 · Questions

Questions about natural diamonds

How do I know a diamond is really natural?

The certificate confirms it: the lab tests every diamond for its origin before grading it. Most natural diamonds also carry a laser inscription on the girdle with the report number, and our gemologist checks the stone against its certificate in Montreal before it ships.

GIA, IGI or HRD for a natural diamond?

All three grade natural diamonds. GIA created the grading system the others follow and grades more natural diamonds than any other lab. We offer all three, and our gemologist reads every report the same way.

Why does a natural diamond cost more than a lab-grown diamond?

Because it is rare. A natural diamond formed in the earth over billions of years and can’t be made to order. A lab-grown diamond of the same size and grades costs much less.

How much does a 1 carat natural diamond cost in Canada?

It depends mostly on the cut, colour and clarity. Our search shows the price of every stone in Canadian dollars, with shipping and duties included.

Can I return a natural diamond?

No. Natural diamonds are always final sale. Before you buy, you get the certificate, the Jouwell Diamond Score, the 360° video of the exact stone, and our gemologist’s opinion if you ask for it.

Can you set my diamond in a ring?

Jouwell sells loose diamonds only. Once you’ve chosen your stone, we can refer you to Sawaiia for custom engagement ring design, or your own jeweller can set it.
